Day 26: Made It

The Grind-ies are the gravelly, down and dirty, mentally painful, zero-to-something thinking, learning, and producing that it takes to create something of your own. The Grind-ies Challenge is a 30-day pursuit to enter the Grind-ies mindset on a regular basis and document the experience.

That’s it—I’ve made it as a writer!

After a decade of pounding the keyboard and pavement, enduring loneliness, and crawling through the underworld, I reached a writer achievement that can only be interpreted as pro status.

My friend, a restaurant manager, procrastinated writing a recommendation letter for one of her employees.

Sitting on my scooter at the edge of her driveway, she said, “Will you write it? I’ll pay you $20.”

“Yes. Yes, I will.”

I went home and wrote it. She called a little later to discuss getting food. Scrumptious philly cheesesteaks were ordered by my grateful peer.

I emailed her the letter and scooted back to her place with silverware, napkins, and ketchup in my backpack.

The warm meat overflowed from the soft bread as I dipped the sandwich in melted cheese. The thick, steak fries were just-the-right-warm in the middle. The split-out jalapenos got stabbed by my merciless forked. The lawn chair lost its tenant to a driveway that allowed for a sprawled-out, cement picnic.

I accepted this was the “$20” for writing the letter. That was beyond okay.

It was sublime.
